 The Ric Sanders Trio

Image description
Since 1985 Ric Sanders has been the fiddle player in Fairport Convention. In the late 70s he played in both Soft Machine and The Albion Band, and it was in the latter that he met Michael Gregory, now drummer with The Home Service. Ric’s association with guitarist and vocalist Vo Fletcher goes back even further – they played together when still teenagers. Vo has played with artists as diverse as Rik Mayall and Nigel Kennedy (just to keep Ric on his toes!).

It was inevitable that these three pals would play together, and over the last decade they’ve been involved in many projects, from recording Miles Davis classics live in Lincoln Cathedral to improvising an album with the inspirational Anjali Dance Company. Over the last couple of years though, they’ve taken a different direction, reconnecting with the music closest to their hearts. It’s music firmly rooted in the Americana Blues.

They love playing it, and their recent performances have shown just how much people love hearing it – a rockin’ good time was had by all!

Great British Folk Festival - December 2015

"What an amazing concert last night. We could have sat listening to them all night. Please more of the Ric Sanders Trio."

"An absolutely mind blowing concert from the Ric Sanders Trio."

Those who know Ric Sanders as a violinist with folk-rockers Fairport Convention may have been surprised by his Trio's repertoire at the Old Ship Inn in Lowdham this week. The group started out in modern jazz and last played Lowdham eight years ago. But their return was very much blues-orientated, with Sanders' violin often slotting into the groove where you would expect a guitar to be. "I guess we've finally found our vibe," he said after the gig.

That said, there were instances where he was in Stéphane Grappelli mode, notably in call-and-response classic Diddy Wah Diddy and Bye Bye Blackbird, which included an instrumental mid-section based on the Beatles' Blackbird.  Sanders was joined on stage by Michael Gregory (drums and percussion) and Vo Fletcher (vocals and guitar). Fletcher oscillated between a laid-back JJ Cale style on songs like Dixie and Louis Collins and Howling Wolf on Werewolves Of London and Hot Night.

Eerie Canal got the audience singing along and a rendition of Ry Cooder's How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live? showed how blues themes can span the ages. Dave Van Ronk's Green Green Rocky Road tipped a wink to the Coen brothers' next film, Inside LLewyn Davis, and the encore of No Bankers Left Behind brought wry smiles.

"That's the best gig ever in here," commented one regular.
